Job Description

For the most part, a teacher’s aide provides an enormous amount of support for the classroom teacher.  For example, a teacher’s aide might be responsible for walking children to art class or gathering them together again after lunch or recess.  In addition, you may be responsible for filling out supply requisitions, as well as assisting with the process of grading and evaluating students.  Depending on your skills and aptitudes, the teacher may also ask you to tutor children that are having difficulty learning certain subjects.

Educational Requirements

As teachers rely more on aides, the educational and background requirements for the field are changing.  That said, in some areas, you can still become a teacher’s aide with only a high school diploma.  In other regions, you’ll need to have at least an associate’s degree in order to find work in the field.  Typically, the school district you work for will also provide on-the-job training to help you become more familiar with the skills necessary for working as a teacher’s aide.

Once you become a full teacher, there are many other types of work you can move into.  Based on your experiences as a teacher’s aide, you may choose to study to be a librarian or a guidance counselor, or you may elect to work in a private school setting.   You may also decide to move into education administration, although this will likely require even more education.  In these positions, you’ll have the opportunity to influence the education process through the hiring of new teachers and the allocation of the yearly budget.

Depending on your level of education and specialty, you may be expected to perform a wide range of tasks.  For example, if you work in a pediatric oncology unit, you may oversee chemotherapy injections and take charge of providing care in emergency situations.  You’ll also be responsible for supervising other nurses on the unit.  This may include comparing doctor’s orders to the actual activities of each nurse and reprimanding nurses who have failed to follow orders.  You may also have to direct CNAs and deal with parents that want to know about test results and the health status of their children.

In order to be a pediatric charge nurse, you’ll need to attend nursing school and take special classes in pediatric nursing.  Once you graduate, you’ll have to take your NCLEX-RN exam in order to become board certified in pediatric nursing.  The results of your exam will be used to determine whether or not you can receive the state license necessary to work in the field.  For the most part, you won’t be able to obtain a job as a charge nurse until you’ve worked for a number of years as a regular nurse.  As you distinguish yourself in your hospital, you may be invited to apply for promotion to the position of charge nurse.

In many cases, if you search online job banks, you’ll find many different kinds of entry-level nursery jobs.  For example, you may find positions supervising playtime or jobs in which you teach children using games, music, and artwork.  Without question, almost every job you find will also include helping children socialize in appropriate ways with each other and adults.

As you might expect, many of these jobs require certification, as well as experience with specific elements of child care.  If you don’t meet these requirements, you may find employers that are willing to train you or positions you can hold while you pursue further education.  For the most part, if you’re happy with the job and do well at it, you should be able to advance to a permanent position once you’ve completed training.  You may also find employers that are willing to pay tuition for you to attend seminars and more formal classes.
